What is the History of McHenry County IL?

Built upon the initial exploration for farmland through the Indian trails after the Black Hawk War of 1832 and eventual demand for railroads, modern McHenry County has become a mix of sprawling suburbia dispersed throughout well-planned forest preserves and agricultural land use.  With the petition approved in 1836, McHenry County was originally comprised of both Lake and McHenry County as it is today.  With the County Seat in McHenry, IL many east of the Chain O' Lakes found the trip to be quite a task to complete business necessary in the location of the County Seat.  Eastern McHenry County voters agreed to form a new county in 1839 called  Lake County.   Centerville was renamed Woodstock and became the new county seat in 1844.  Much of the agricultural lands, predominately in the west, has been preserved through acts of land use planning enacted by the McHenry County Board in the 1980s.
